HA5 - Task 5 Evaluation
So start off the assignment I had to research image reference that I could use as a sort of inspiration for my artwork, after i had found the references I needed I started my exploratory stage with exploring designs for my knife, pistol and deck of cards after this I went on to doing the environment and then lastly the character. Once I had completed my exploratory stage it was time go onto the approval stage and for this I had to choose one design from the exploratory stage as a sort of base design although I had chosen a design I didn't draw it exactly the same as the exploration one like for example about two days after i had completed the approval for my knife and pistol I decided to change it because I thought that it didn't quite reach my standards, another one is when I was around halfway through the promotional stage of the character I decided to completely change his head and neck because I thought that the neck was way too long for a normal human and the head was the size of a pea and apart from these I didn't changed anything else. For the promotional part of the character I had a little trouble deciding on what colours to use but when I thought of the characters description which was that he wears brightly coloured clothes I decided to just randomly choose a colour. For my strengths I would say that having to quickly finish and think up of an idea were my strong points but for my weaknesses I would say is that I spend enough time planning and scheduling so at some point I was kind of panicking another is that I chose a time consuming method to colour my promotional stage which was to use acrylic paint but I managed to finish it on time but I did rush my promotional stage which ended up in my disatisfaction.
Over all I had a fun time doing the assignment but I don't think that my final illustration presentation isn't quite up to standards because I rushed it due to the lack of my planning.

HA4 - Concept Art Process
Exploration: The exploration stage of the concept art process is where you usually come up with a vast range of idea as to what either the character or the environment of the game will look like the exploration stages of the concept art process are mostly just loose drawings or sketches of the in-game assets. Usually artists would use pencils rather than pens because they are much more controllable and also because they can be erased.
Characters:
The character part of the exploration process is where the artists come up with a various range of loose ideas for the character, be it their body shape, their height, their hairstyle or clothes, it can be anything and as they go along they will just keep adding and adding on to their current ideas which they might end up with 10 or more sketches of the character. The image below doesn't just show the character it shows actions and movements that the character might be doing in-game. Based on the game these character concept art especially the two other images also shows moves and actions the character might do while casting that particular ability.
Objects:
The objects part of the exploration is where the artists come up with various ranges of ideas for items or other assets like what the character could be using or wearing, be it a sword, a gun, a knife, a hat etc. and just like the character part they sketch these quite lightly as it is still in the early stages. As the process goes on they would have to think of the shape and the size that would best suit the character, the environment and the era that the game is set in.

Although these don't look as loose as the others they are still experimenting and coming up with ideas as to what kinds and what shapes that characters weapons will be. It also showcases different ideas of what the characters clothes could look like.
Environment:
The environment part of the exploration process is where the artists come up with various ideas for what the environment might look like and what kind of features and assets will be put in it according to what the theme of the environment is. Like the others these will be loosely sketched out just so that they can have an idea where to put what and what it they have to put in. In this stage they don't usually go too much into details like precisely drawing leaves and adding the right shading, like the images below it's shows the shadings as just scribbles.
Approval
The approval stage of the concept art process is where the artists have acquired approval from the higher ups meaning getting the greenlight from the publishers and partners as to which idea from the exploration stage they should go with and once it has been approved the artists will finally start adding every little detail on the character, object or/and environment. Once the theme or the look has been approved they will still come up and draw ideas that would fit the theme but this time the drawings will be much more detailed even though they're just ides but that's the point of concept art.
Characters:
For the character they would start adding in the details on the clothes the objects or items they use their facial features etc. Like I said before once the idea or theme has been approved the artists will once again come up and draw ideas of the characters pose, their clothing and other details in preparation for the promotional art work.
Objects:
For the object they would have to add in details like with the character they'd add some shadings to make it look 3 dimensional but of course they would also draw in the little details like if it was on a sword the sword could have carvings on it and they's have to make those show up no matter how small but if it was a gun or something with an interior they would have to draw detailed drawings of that particular objects anatomy.
Environment:
For the environment they'd have to add in details like the shadows, the shape of things like if they had to draw a tree they'd have to craw accurate looking leaves and the other features then they will also start fine lining outlines. Once the theme or the ideas of the artists have been approved they will still have to work hard to come up with even more detailed ideas of what they can put in according to the approved theme, like if they came up with an idea or a theme for a game they will have to stick to the theme because it wouldn't look right if for example the theme was horror but there faries and unicorns running about unless it was approved by the publishers and your partners.
Promotion
The promotion stage of the concept art is basically the final stage of the concept art process and is where the public usually get hyped because for example if it was game that's about to be released and the company releases a promotional art work then obviously the public or the fans will get hyped and excited for it plus how well presented that promotional art work is adds on to the hype.
Characters:
The character is what they usually use in the front cover of a promotional art work for a game. This part of the process is where they start colouring in the character and everything that is attached to him but they have to think of what the character's personality is and how they act so that those two factors could correspond with each other. In MMORPG's the promotional artworks are usually whats called a splash art which they also use for skins (skins are used to change a characters appearance and most of the time effects in game).
Original Splash Art Pool Party Splash Art
Objects:
The promotional artworks for objects like weapons in MMORPG's like League of Legends are included and showcased along with the promotional artwork for the character these promotional artworks are called splash arts. The weapons are usually included because they are a part of the character and they basically make up half of the who the character is.
Environment:
In games like League of Legends promotional environments are usually showcased whenever there is an update or changes being made to the environment but they are also showcased a loading for when you are about to start a match or when your chosing a map to play in. But there are also games that showcase it through some sort of a new additional map like an expansion for example.

Fan art made by people who are't exactly working for that company also counts as a part of the exploration process because they come up with ideas that could become possible looks for the character meaning that people who create fan art automatically become a part of the process for concept art.

01 - Primary Observation Portraits Exercise
Eye See 1
For this exercise i drew on an A4 paper where i used 3 colored pens which were in the color brown, gray and black. I used the brown as the outline for the portrait and then used the gray for the lighter shadows and went in with the black for the darker shadows, The duration of this exercise for me was 3 to 5 minutes. This exercise was supposed to be a close up of the eye but i thought that i would just keep anyway because i still used some of the instructions like using the three colored pens.
Free Hand
For this exercise i was allowed to choose which ever kind of media and technique i had previously used on the other exercises so i went with the same media and technique as my first try on the Eye see exercise but i drew a full face portrait of the person i was partnered with for the exercise, for this exercise we were given 6 minutes time limit and this took about the same time as the time limit. I like this liked this exercise because i was allowed to use whatever technique and media i wanted and also because it looks majestic, to improve this piece i would like to spend more time on it and apply more dimension by adding more shadings.
Tonal Face
For this exercise i used a Biro pen on paper and for the technique i used as i was instructed was to only use straight vertical and horizontal lines. This exercise had the time limit of 6 minutes and i was working on it until the time was up. I had some difficulty doing shapes and shadings with this technique, to improve it i would use the technique more to shade the areas needed.
Blindfolded
For this exercise i was instructed to use any colored pen then i had to intently stare at my partner and then draw a full face portrait without looking down on the paper meaning i had to draw a full face portrait, not look at the piece of paper and guess where to put the nose, eyes, mouth etc. This exercise was quite difficult obviously because i didn't know where to exactly put the parts in but it was fun doing and me and my partner laughed while in the process of drawing. This exercise took me less than 5 minutes because i did it quite quick.
Cheesy Smile
For this exercise i used a Biro pen and i was instructed to draw a smiling mouth but it had to reach from one side of the page to the other on landscape format and then i just added in the rest of the features. This exercise wasn't too hard to do and it only took me about 5 minutes because i had to also draw in the teeth which took the most time to do, i'm quite happy with how this exercise turned out.
Eye See 2
For this exercise i drew a close up of my partners weyes on an A4 paper where i used 3 colored pens which were in the color red, blue and black. I started out drawing in the eye with the blue pen along with the shape of the eyeball then i went in with the black to draw the pupils, the eyebrows and the eyelashes. For the vain bits i used the red and then tried doing shades with the three colors which i used the red as a sort of shadow. This exercise took me 5 minutes because i was trying to figure out which i color to use for what but if i were to do this again i would apply more shadow like shades using the three colors.
Don't Stop
For this exercise i had to use one pen in any color which i went with red and then i was instructed to draw a full face portrait of my partner but i wasn't allowed to take the pen off of the page. This exercise didn't take too long to do, it took me about three minutes, while in the process of doing the drawing i was worried that a part of the piece of paper would tear due to the pen going back and forth. If i was to do this again i would spend more time doing it and drawing the parts of the face more precisely.
Hot and Cold
For this exercise i used two colored pens which had to be hot and cold colors so i chose blue and red. I was instructed to only use blocks or shapes to use for the features and everything about my partners face. Like the others this exercise didn't take me too long to do but it was hard figuring out which shape to use for the parts. If i were to do this again i would think up of more shapes to use for the features of the face.
Full Face
For this exercise i used a Biro pen and i was instructed that i have to draw the face but the chin must touch the bottom of the piece of paper and then the hair or the top of the head must also reach the top of the piece of paper and the ears to touch the sides. This exercise took me about 3 minutes and if i were to do it again i would take more time drawing it so that the lines don't look too jagged and distorted.
02 - Primary Observation Expressive Portraits Exercise
For this exercise i a pencil and and A3 piece of paper which i then divided six squares. The instruction was that i had to look into a mirror and draw myself doing the expressions i was instructed to do, for each of the expressions i tried to add a color which that expression or emotion represented so for happy i colored some lines in the hair yellow using acrylic paint then for the anger one i decided that i would put flames bursting out from the sides of my eyes because anger reminds me of fire and the color red.
For the excited expression i used multiple bright colors of acrylic paint because to me excitement is a mixture of emotions then for the gloomy expression i used the color violet because its what i think gloomy or sad represents the most and as for the last two i just left it because i couldn't think of color that confusion and tongue sticking out represents.
Each of the expressions took me about ten minutes because i tried to draw it as realistically similar to my own face but i were to do this exercise again i wouldn't try as hard as i did to make as realistically similar to my face because it was more time consuming than i had expected.

03 - Primary Observation Figures Exercise
For this exercise i had to work directly from life and produce a series sheets of quick figure drawings of the human figure in four different poses which were sitting, walking, standing, and sleeping. Each of the drawings took me about 3 minutes because i only focused on the actual figure of my subject rather than the clothes and facial features hence them being quick figure drawings. This exercise wasn't too hard to do but i were to do it again i would try and add some minor sketches of my subjects facial features.
04 - Primary Observation Expressive Hands Exercise
For this exercise i was instructed to carry out four observational drawings of my non-drawing hand overleaf which is my left hand using a media of my choice. I had to observe and draw my had illustrating anger, stop, peace and ok. I started with ok and what i did for it was just do a thumbs up, for the second one i did peace and just did the peace sign, for the third one which is stop i just drew my hand but with my fingers close together and finally for anger i just a fist. For each of the drawings it took me about 5-10 minutes because i tried to make looks as realistic as possible and i also had to apply the shadings in and my choice of media was a pencil and i'm quite happy with how the drawings came out.
05 - Secondary Observation Gridded Exercise
For this exercise i had to choose whether to draw the female or the male parkour app character so i chose the female one then using the gridding technique i transferred the A4 photographic image to the much larger A2 gridded plain paper. I was given the A4 image and then two gridded plain paper and i did one side at a time. The first side took me about 2 hours because i was trying to be really precise about everything but for the second part which was from F and so i kind of rushed it so it only took me about an hour. If i was to this exercise again i would spend equal times doing each of the sides to make sure they look balanced.
06 - Secondary Observation Mythical Creature Exercise
For this exercise i used the supplied templates and visual aids that i found in the internet to create a coloured freehand drawing of a mythical up of different kinds of animals. The mythical creature that i had to construct consisted of a peacocks head for the head, bat wings, a man's torso, crab claws for hands, cheetahs legs and the feet of an eagle as shown on the image above. All together this exercise took me about 2 hours because i had to search the internet for my desired parts plus the drawing and lastly the coloring. I am happy with what this exercise resulted to.
07 - Secondary Observation Tracing Exercise
Traced
Traced
Tracing Template
First of all i had to choose of a partner who i will be doing the photoshoot with doing the following actions: leaning forward, punching, grabbing, reaching, lunging and kicking at the camera. For the photoshoot i had to take at least 10 pictures of my partner doing the poses and after i had taken the pictures i needed i also did the actions or poses for her. Once the photoshoot was finished i had to put all of the pictures on photoshop and make a contact sheet and once that was done i chose of the poses to trace which i chose one of the reaching poses for.
This exercise took about two lessons including having to do the photo shoot and putting them into photoshop as a contact sheet these two in total took a whole lesson to do. The next thing i had to do was chose a pose i wanted then turning it into black and white using photoshop then i just printed it out and just traced over it. I had fun doing this exercise with my partner so im quite happy with how the whole process went.
08 - Construction Drawing Manga Head Exercise
For this exercise i was instructed to go on youtube and watch a tutorial on two different ways to draw a manga head which wasn't hard and i enjoyed this exercise a lot personally because i like anime. The first drawing took me about 45 minutes to do including shading and going over the lines to make it darker and thicker. The second one i would say took me longer because for this one i had to draw the eyes open. I am really happy with how both of these drawings turned out.
09 - Silhouette Figure Drawing Exercise
For this exercise i went out with 2 other people to go around the college and draw people but we had to draw only their outlines and color the inside it without putting any sort of detail except for the outlines so basically we had to draw people's silhouette. For the first four i drew strangers but for the second batch i alternatively drew the people i was with. each of the silhouettes took less than 5 minutes to do and i'm quite happy with how they all came out.
01 - Isometric Perspective Exercise
02 - Single Point Perspective Exercise
For this exercise i had to use a single point that was already provided to draw a 3D M. I used a normal HB pencil for this and it took me about the same time as the F but im happy with the way it turned out which is once again satisfying.

03 - Two Point Perspective Exercise
For this exercise i had to use two points to draw a 3 Dimensional 3 in a different perspective from the M and i also used a normal HB pencil for this and it took me about 15 minutes to do this one which i also had fun doing because it came out really nicely.

04 - Three Point Perspective Exercise
For this exercise i had to use 3 points to make a 3 Dimensional H which took me a while to figure out how to do it but when i did it wasn't as easy as the other ones because sometimes i would misplace lines and then it would make the H look a bit distorted but at the end i got that hang of it and i'm happy with how it turned out. This exercise took me about 25 minutes to do because of correcting miss placed lines and also shading it in to add to the 3D effect.
05 - Two Point Perspective Spacestation Exercise
For this exercise i had to watch a tutorial in youtube that was provided for us and i had to follow on what to do and i for the whole artwork the i only used two things as preference to draw the buildings and the floor design and the two preferences were the two points that i was instructed to put in. This exercise was quite frustrating on some bits because the lines wouldn't look equal and it made things wonky but i would correct it and put it on the place where it should be.
I first drew it with pencil making fine lines and then when everything was in place i started to go over it with a fine liner pen to add more details and make it look even more futuristic. This took me about 2 lessons and a half which isn't very surprising considering all the details that i had to put in it but i had fun with the whole process and im very happy with how it turned out.

06 - Crated Primitive Objects Exercise 1
For this exercise i was instructed to draw out 3 shapes but the other shape was basically the gridded box that i had to draw them on so i just left that one out. The first one i did was a sphere which i started by pin pointing and marking where the sides of it will touch and connect which was quite difficult to do but for the second one it was quite easy because i like the first one i had to pin point and mark where i will connect the points to make the shape which is a square based pyramid. For the first one it took me about 20-30 minutes because it was quite difficult to pin point where the sides would touch but for the second one it took me less than a minute to pin point and mark and then connect them all together to create the shape. Both of these were drawn using normal HB pencil.

06 - Crated Primitive Objects Exercise 2
Both of these weren't too difficult to do at all just like the first two i just to pinpoint and mark where the edges and sides would touch and then connect them. Both of these took me about 5 minutes to do and i enjoyed doing both them and im quite happy with how they both turned out.

06 - Crated Primitive Objects Exercise 3
For this exercise i had to try and draw a torus shape which is basically a donut and this took me about an hour or more because of how difficult and complex its anatomy is and if i were to do this exercise again i would try and observe the shape more because im not happy with the end result because it doesn't look like what it's supposed to.

01 - Mark-Making Techniques Exercise
For this exercise i was given a sheet with instructions on the side as the image above shows. For the first instruction it instructed me to use different line techniques to to fill each of the little boxes on the left hand side which 6 of them already tells me on what line pattern i had to put in it which means that i had to invent 6 line patterns of my own totalling to 12 patterns. The second instruction instructed me to use those line techniques to apply tone to the geometric shapes on the right hand side and i had to select my own light source which i didn't do because i used a completed version as preference.
Finally for the third instruction i had to connect the dots that were below it but one had to be a very light line the other mid-tone and for the third one a very dark line. For the little boxes it too me about 10 minutes because for the last 6 i had to think of my own line patterns, for the second part it took me about 20 minutes but i think it would've taken me longer if i use a completed version as preference and the last one took me less than a minute to do because it was just making lines going from light to dark. For the whole task i used an inky pen to them alll. I am very happy with how this task came out.

02 - Blended Shading Technique Exercise
For this exercise i had to first set up a still life using the supplied cutlery,
cups and paper plates and after setting it up i had to use the willow charcoal to make an observational drawing while employing a regressive technique. And i used this tonal technique to give the drawing of the still life i created a form. This took me the whole lesson to do so an hour and im happy with how the end result turned out.

01 - Pastel Textures Exercise
For this exercise i went around the college with my friends to look for the patterns or textures that we were instructed using a specific type of pastel to draw the two sets and for the first set we had to use chalk based pastel and we had to try and draw the following: wooden floor, plants at reception plant, books of our choice on the shelves in the library and the red carpet in the student area. For the second one we had to use oil based pastels and try to draw the following: waiting platform, yellow parking lines, vents and the mulch that some bushes are planted in.
In my opinion i think that between the the two the chalk based was better only because it was much easier to blend but the downside is that when ever you use it would leave behind some dust which could accidentally stain your clothes however for the oil based pastels although they had minimal blendability they didn't leave any kind of dusty waste. For this exercise we were given about 50 minutes to do all eight of them and we finished it just about the time limit given to us. I had fun doing it with my friends and im happy with the end results.
01 - Party Blower Ideas Generation Exercise
For this exercise i was given an envelope with a party blower in it including the instruction that i have to come up with at least 20 alternative ideas for a party blower. I used pencil for this on an A4 paper and this took me about and hour or two coming up with ideas, i didn't put much detail on them because they are just ideas after all and i am quite happy with how most of them turned out.
01 - Color Wheel Exercise
For this exercise i had to use colored marker pens to illustrate the three set of colors which are primary, secondary and tertiary. So first i did the primary colors which are red, blue and yellow then i combined the colors in the primary set of colors that are next to each other to make the secondary colors using only lines so for example to make the orange i would have to combine the yellow and the red together then to make green which is the second secondary color in my color wheel it would be a combination of yellow and blue and then it moves on to the other color which i just repeated the process again. For the tertiary set i combined the primary and the secondary together but i put in more primary colored lines than the secondary meaning that i would put more red than 'orange' and then for the next color it would the 'orange' mixed with the yellow but they would be more 'orange' than the yellow because i goes before it and i just repeat this process. This only took about 30 minutes and if i were to do it again i would do the lines more carefully and precisely.

02 - Analogous Colour Scheme Exercise
For this i used colors that were next to each other on the color wheel to color in the sheet. This took me about an hour to do and if i were to do it again i would be more careful and think about which part im coloring in because i was instructed that the same colors should not touch each other but as you can see from the image above between the C and the A i used orange accidentally for both of them.

03 - Complementary Colour Scheme Exercise
For this i used colors that were opposite to each other in the color wheel to color the letters in and i alternated the colors that i used for the letter and the outside of it like for example if i colored V in blue and the outside in orange then the letter on the next box would have to be orange with a blue outside. This one didn't take me as long as the previous one because i didn't have to alternatively use the colors as much. An im happy with the how it turned out.

04 - Triadic Colour Scheme Exercise
For this i used 2 sets of the colors that were equally apart from each other, i used the primary set and the secondary set to make it look more colorful. This took me about an hour because i had to alternate using the colors like the other previous exercises, and if i were to do it again i would just rearrange the colors but im quite happy with how it turned out.

01 - Brush and Ink Landscape Exercise
For this exercise i had to use indian black ink along with water and four pieces of A2 paper, i was instructed to draw on each of the paper one at a time but this is what i found difficult and worrying because i knew that somehow they wouldn't connect at all when i put them together but im quite happy with how they are individually but that wasn't the objective of the exercise but this is the end result of it so if i were to do it again i would think up of a way that it would definitely connect when i put them all together. Each piece had different durations but for the bottom left it took me about 30 minutes or more to complete, for the bottom right it only took me about 5 minutes because i kind of rushed it, for the top right it took me about 25 minutes and lastly for the top left you can tell that i spent the most time on it because for that part there more things like trees and a few structures included in the scene than the others.
